new year barbeques

We were invited to two BBQ’s on the same night! First we went into Nelson to Neene & Richard’s for their New Year’s BBQ…

Then we drove to Tahunanui campground for the annual Clarkson’s BBQ! Anne gave Poppy a beautiful painted rock with her name on it. Poppy played inside the caravan and tents. Mark & Yogi were tending the fire and Poppy played in the back of the car when it got late. Ann & Mark were pointing out all the beautiful bright stars in the sky!

happy new year!

Poppy and Adrienne had New Year’s Eve dinner at the farm and then headed home to bed… To all those who have been reading Poppy’s blog over the past two years – we hope your 2008 is GREAT, mate!

Adrienne spent the night watching the Royal Variety Concert and Elton John’s amazing 60th birthday concert while working on the computer…. Yogi called at midnight to shout HAPPY NEW YEAR and share New Year’s resolutions.

poppy’s camera – christmas day

Poppy received a kid’s digital camera from her Daddy for Christmas – and she has been really enjoying clicking photos. I have added a red poppy in the bottom left corner of her photos so you can tell her photos from mine. It’s incredibly interesting to me to see what she chooses to click and seeing things from her perspective. The camera seems to work better outdoors – but I’m sure her technique will develop over time!

gingerbread & christmas lights

After a late afternoon sleep today Poppy was ready to wait up until dark to go out and see the Christmas lights. To pass the time we made gingerbread christmas trees and stars and iced them. First, we had to shop for all the ingredients because Mummy does not routinely bake! The whole process was exciting for Poppy and she was a dedicated tester at the end. Mummy helped with the icing because that started to get a little sticky!

Going out in the dark in her pajamas and gumboots (it rained this afternoon) was a big thrill. Poppy said “It’s Daaark!” several times and was totally immersed in the world of lights outside the car windows. When we arrived at the Main Road, Hope house everyone has voted as one of the best for kids, Poppy was ready to see Santa. He was sitting on his sleigh in the driveway and she had a turn sitting next to him and watching the reindeer moving in front. We then toured around the house and watched all the moving pieces. There was a big dancing Santa statue that Poppy copied to the delight of several older couples watching her. Lots of kids were also there in their jammies and watching the toy train circle the Christmas tree in the main picture window along with Poppy. As it was now close to 10pm, we said goodbye to Santa and headed home to bed. The highlight of the night for Poppy was the incredibly big bright full moon hanging low in the sky…. it beat any artificial light show hands down.

music class

I was so proud of Poppy at music today – she participated enthusiastically the whole session and sang lots of the words and did all the actions.  Her ability to focus on the activities has definitely increased and she is able to maintain that attention span for the whole half hour.  I remember taking her to her first music class when she was 4 months old and she is now 22 months old.  Unfortunately, that was our final class for the year!!!!  Thanks so much to Megan, Carol and Bernadette for providing a fantastic opportunity for Poppy.
