5th birthday celebrations

Poppy’s day began with a rip-roaring sing-along (to herself!) and a bowl of cereal as a birthday treat. She chose it herself and was very pleased with her fancy breakfast. After dropping off our summer holiday toys, we chose a BMX bike without training wheels for Poppy to try from the Toy Library. The running bike she has been riding all holidays has certainly been worthwhile to teach balance and handling speed before the next step.

After a birthday fluffy at the mall, we dropped in to preschool for her friends to sing Happy Birthday and then went out to the farm for a special birthday lunch. After helping GranJan finish decorating her amazing birthday cake Poppy opened her presents – a BEAUTIFUL dress from Grandpa Bill, a lovely poppy top from Ayla, Mary Poppins DVD from Georgie, really neat hanging baskets and The BFG book from NeeNe, five dollars from Ma & Pa and some singing lessons from GranJan & Yogi. Adrienne already gave Poppy her gifts – her very own facebook profile and her first company – PopCards! Uncle Christopher sent a funny JibJab animated birthday card that Poppy watched 15 times.

We ate a yummy lunch and then got out the bike to try it on the flat lawn…. after a little guided push, Poppy was OFF….. no looking back as she wheeled around the farm, no problems on her first peddled bike with no training wheels.

We stopped in to Orange Dog with birthday cupcakes for afternoon tea before heading down to the Tahuna bus shelter to set up for Poppy’s party. We blew up lots of balloons and helped Ben with the bouncy castle – then we hid all the treasure hunt clue cards for people to find.  While I was working on the decorations, Poppy rode her bike around and around the paths at Tahuna with a big smile on her face!

Poppy’s friends started arriving at 5pm and had a great time on the gladiator bouncy castle and eating pizza. We sent lots of kids out on a treasure hunt and then we all ate cupcakes and lollipops…. the wind completely died down this afternoon so the beach was our next stop. Everyone who brought their big spades made short work of a huge paddling pool just before the tide came in and demolished it – right on cue. An evening swim in the warm Tahuna waves finished off a fun celebration – Poppy loved every minute of it.

Thanks to all our friends who came along with their families…. we were so pleased you could share this milestone birthday with us.

party rsvp

You’ve been invited to Poppy’s 5th birthday pizza and paddling party at Tahunanui Beach.  Please bring your whole family and don’t forget your togs! Let us know how many people you are bringing with you (please take responsibility for the supervision of your own child/ren on the beach) and what type of pizza you like best (choices below).

We really look forward to seeing you on Tuesday evening to help Poppy celebrate her 5th birthday. We will be digging a big paddling pool on the beach as the tide comes in – so bring your best spade! We will meet outside the Beach Cafe from 5pm and will play on the beach after we have pizza for dinner.
No presents or cards please – and check back here on www.poppyford.com for weather updates if there is a chance of wind or rain.

happy new year!

This year Poppy was determined to stay up until midnight – and she just made it!  We spent some time in the evening with my cousins at their church.  They had a variety show with awards and fun games to keep us entertained while waiting for the New Year’s Eve countdown.  At around 11.15pm we drove into town and watched the live band at the Cathedral Steps until the countdown at midnight and the fireworks.  We then took off straight away because Poppy was starting to wind down – and drove along Rocks Road to see all the Tahuna fireworks happening on the beach and at the camp (I think!).  By the time we hit the motorway home, Poppy was sound asleep.  She didn’t wake up until close to 10am on New Year’s Day and we have another big day planned with train rides and some boating at Rabbit Island with a BBQ dinner.

Wishing all Poppy’s blog readers a wonderful 2011 full of fun memories.

boxing day 2010

After a relaxing morning playing with all the new toys, we decided to make the most of the amazing weather and head to Tahunanui Beach where Poppy rode the trains and walked the beach.  Then after an afternoon sleep, we took GranJan to the movies in Motueka to see Jack Black’s Gulliver’s Travels…. before picking some berries then heading out with Yogi to see the winners of the Light Up Nelson competition.  Poppy went straight to sleep when she hit the pillow at 11.30pm – but not before giving me her answers to these questions:

“Was that a fun day?”  — “FanJollyTastic!”
“Would you please have a sleep-in tomorrow morning?” — “AbsoJollyLutely!”

christmas 2010

After a fun evening wrapping presents and getting things ready for Santa, Poppy went to bed dreaming of presents and candy canes.  In the morning she was thrilled with all the goodies from her Santa sack.  After church Yogi & GranJan came round to open all the presents and play with toys.  We had a lovely lunch of BLT croissants and fresh cherries before they left us watching the Wizard of Oz on TV.  Poppy’s favourite gift has been her tickets to the Dora The Explorer Live concert from Mummy and the ice-block maker from NeeNe.  She’s played with her teddy bear from daddy the longest, as it needed stuffing (complete with little stuffed heart) and dressing.  She is also very keen to get out onto the pavement with the sidewalk chalk from daddy too.  However, the activity that’s captured her attention the most has been creating JibJab sendables with photos of all her friends.
